East Village District - Downtown San Diego

The East Village "Ballpark" District is downtown's largest neighborhood and is expected to be the recipient of the most redevelopment in the near-term future. The major project planned for the area include the Ballpark District which will include downtown San Diego real estate.

The Padres Ballpark District is an area of approximately 60 blocks that has been a blighted and underutilized area. When citizens of San Diego approved the financing of the new Ballpark for the San Diego Padres that has be the catalyst for redeveloping this area. The initial 30-block phase includes approximately 950 hotel rooms (in three hotel projects), 200,000 square feet of retail space, 5,000 parking spaces, a new main city library, 700 apartments and condominiums, and 700,000 square feet of office space. The Campbell Landing Hotel had been proposed on Port tidelands, and although development plans have not been finalized, a 1,000 to 1,200-room hotel and marina is contemplated.

East Village, will experience the greatest residential growth in the coming years. Scattered throughout the area are artists' homes, studios, galleries and shops. San Diego City College, the New School of Architecture and two high schools are in the area. Former warehouses, even an old church, have been transformed into charming residential lofts. A dramatic facelift is planned for 12th Avenue, linking San Diego Bay to Balboa Park. The new San Diego Padres Ballpark and Park at the Park opened in 2004, and a new Main Library and thousands of new residential units will be constructed as well.
