At one time, the El Cortez Hotel was the place to be is you were rich, famous and cool. Various guests who have visited the hotel include U.S. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Gerald Ford, and singers Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and Roy Rogers.[6] The hotel was featured in the 1963 film A Ticklish Affair. Almost every long tome San Diegan has a memory of a prom, special date, or event held in the Don Room, Sky Bar or Starlight Room. On July 25, 1990, the City of San Diego's Historic Site Board declared the building to be "historic", which prevented it from being demolished. The El Cortez Hotel was eventually added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 17, 2002 for its impact on architecture and engineering.[29] Construction and architecture Construction of the El Cortez began in 1926 and was completed the next year at a cost of $2,500,000.[2][3] The 14-story hotel was built by Richard T. Robinson Jr. in a Spanish Churrigueresque style and designed by architects Albert R. Walker and Percy Eisen who also designed the [Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The hotel was built on the site of Ulysses S. Grant, Jr.'s home, 175 feet (53 m) above sea level. The Churrigueresque decorative style was used in Spanish Colonial architecture in the New World colonial town's important buildings. The style enjoyed a resurgence after architect Bertram Goodhue and Carleton Winslow Sr. studied Spanish Colonial Churrigueresque and Plateresque ornament in Mexico, using it in designing the 1915 Panama-California Exposition buildings in Balboa Park The Exposition popularized its use in Spanish Colonial Revival architecture styles throughout the United States.
