San Diego Airport – Terminal One

San Diego AirportSan Diego is growing in popularity and more and more people are flying into San Diego International Airport.  There is talk about Terminal 1 being torn down and rebuilding a bigger and better terminal.

Terminal 1 at San Diego airport opened back in 1967 and cost $5.4 million.  It currently has 18 gate terminals with limited food and shopping options.  Terminal 1 currently doesn’t connect to Terminal 2 and passengers have to go through security a second time if they have to change plains that’s located in the other terminal.  With the new terminal, there will be 28 gate terminals with the 2 terminals connected where you don’t have to go through security again.  More shopping options will be available and a new parking garage will be built.

The new Terminal 1 is projected to cost $2.2 billion dollars.  (Insert whistling noise here)  The new terminal should extent till 2040 where aircraft operations would be 257,000 from today’s # at 64,000 and passengers will be 14.5 million from today’s 9.2 million passengers.

The new Terminal 1 will be built in phases.  The first phase would be to build east of the current Terminal 1 and then once complete, tear down the old Terminal 1 and continue will the redevelopment.

I remember a time where there was talk about the airport moving the airport around the Mira Mesa area.  Maybe that will happen in 2040?
