San Diego Airport Sues Over Crane Heights

Cranes in Downtown San DiegoThe San Diego airport isn’t happy with 3 cranes in downtown San Diego and has filed a lawsuit.  Apparently the real estate in downtown San Diego that the airport is not happy with is the Courthouse expansion, that will cost nearly $500 million, has 3 cranes that exceed the approved height.

The airport doesn’t like the tall cranes because they feel it’s a safety hazard for the planes flying around the city.  The cranes are supposed to fly a flag during the daytime and red lights at night and they have failed with complying to this as well.  The approved heights on the cranes are 472 feet and the cranes are reaching 650 feet.  There is also only supposed to be one crane and not the current 3 that there are.

So the airports wants 2 cranes taken down and also reduce the height of the remaining crane.  Brewer Crane and Rigging mentioned they received approval from the FAA allowing the heights to be as tall as 695 feet.

Sounds like someone is dropping the ball on this one and both are pointing fingers.

The San Diego airport is the busiest single runway in the country and the 2nd in the world. With around 525 flights per day, there are around 51,000 passengers that travel through the San Diego airport.  Because of the travel demand through San Diego, Terminal Two has been renovated and soon Terminal One will as well.
