Downtown San Diego Ferris Wheel

San Diego SkyWheelThere are 3 proposed Ferris wheels that would like to build just south of the Midway Museum in the Marina District in Downtown San Diego. Take a look at the rendering at one of the proposals. Looks pretty cool but many are questioning if it’s practical use for the waterfront location.

The San Diego Skywheel would stand 400 feet high and provide great views of the San Diego Bay. Each of the 30 gondolas could have up to 25 people in each and it would take 30 minutes for the whole wheel to go around one time. The cost to ride this Ferris wheel will be around $25-$30. They are projecting around 1.7 – 2.3 annually. The total cost including a 420 space parking garage and a 30,000 sqft pavilion will cost $200 million.

The San Diego Skywheel that you see in the pictures are from developers Charles Black and David Malmuth from SeaWorld.

The pavilion would display items from local museums that would further attract visitors and also provide a little about San Diego’s history to others. Malmuth wants to provide and tell a story about San Diego and how San Diego plays in the world’s ecosystem.

Let’s see how the Port of San Diego is going to respond to these proposals. It looks cool but is it practical?  I’d also like to see what the owners at Park Place think what their new view will look like?skywheel - ferris wheel
